Author Visit

BEF Grant Funds Author Visit
Gita Varadarajan, co-author of Save Me a Seat, visited Stony Brook School on May 17th. She gave an amazing presentation to the 4th and 5th grades about her story and writing process. We have been preparing for this visit for months and many teachers read the book aloud to their classes. Our G.E.L. classes used the story as a springboard for lessons about judging others and fitting in. A pivotal scene in the book revolves around students choosing an object to represent themselves. In G.E.L. our students did that same activity and drew it. We decorated the library with banners made up of those pictures. Ms. Varadarajan was so impressed!

Ms. Varadarajan also conducted a writing workshop where she gave writing prompts and students did a quick write and then shared their work. How amazing for them to get praise and feedback from a published author!

Students in the Library Lunch Bunch club created a welcome banner, which all the students in the school signed.

Thank you to the BEF for funding this visit and for the purchase of Save Me a Seat for our classroom libraries.
